When Penny, Nicole, and I boarded our flight to Iceland, starting a functional beverage brand was the absolute furthest thing from our minds, but sometimes the best ideas find you when you aren't looking for them.
The Spark: A Gap in the UK Market
All three of us lead active lifestyles and had already experienced the benefits of taking daily collagen. But we were all tired of dealing with messy powders that wouldn't dissolve and swallowing boring supplement pills.
We realised the UK market severely lacked accessible, ready-to-drink collagen products that actually tasted good with targeted and comprehensive nutrition. We wanted the functional benefits of premium collagen, but we wanted it to be as effortless and refreshing as grabbing a sparkling drink out of the fridge.
And so, surrounded by dramatic Icelandic waterfalls and beautiful scenery, FOSS was born.
The Name: Why "FOSS"?
As we explored the country, we spent hours chasing down some of the most spectacular sights Iceland has to offer: its waterfalls.
In Icelandic, the word for waterfall is "Foss".
It was the perfect fit. Waterfalls represent nature, rejuvenation and pure beauty - exactly what we want you to feel whenever you crack open a delicious and refreshing can of FOSS.
The Icon: A Piece of Our Favorite Memory
If you look closely at our cans, you will notice our brand icon. It isn’t just a random geometric shape or a generic water drop.
The icon is actually a carefully designed stencil of our absolute favourite waterfall from that exact holiday - Svöðufoss. We chose to put it front and centre on every single can so that we always have a daily reminder of the inspiration that started this entire journey.
The Colour: Icelandic Moss Green
Iceland isn't just ice and rock; it is covered in some of the most striking, resilient greenery in the world.
The signature green you see across our branding is deliberately chosen to match Icelandic moss, a personal favourite of Nicole (ask her for some facts about Icelandic moss!). This specific shade represents the vibrant, resilient life that thrives in even the most rugged conditions.
